Off to Melbourne, but still blogging

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

I’m off to Melbourne today. Very excited about my trip. Haven’t been down there for about ten years. So I’m looking forward to updating myself on as much of the health, food and natural therapies stuff as possible. I’m going to be meeting up with some practitioners and taking a look at some nutrition and naturopathic centres. This is particularly interesting now I’ve set up my own clinic. Richard is also coming down, to attend the geek-fest that is …

Happy new year and updates

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

Happy new year to you all and welcome to 2008. I’m back to work this week. I’ve had a lovely Christmas and new year. Spent the time showing overseas visitors around this gorgeous City, catching up with my family, playing scarey-sea-monsters with my two nephews and making a solid dent in my reading pile. Definitely a good holiday. Now it’s back to a new year and some changes. h3. New year new clinic Firstly, I’m starting the new year …

Today Tonight

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

For those of you in Australia (and possibly just those of you in Sydney?) . . . if you tune to Channel 7 at 6.30pm tonight, you will see me on Today Tonight talking about food labelling. I filmed it months ago. The first time I’ve ever done TV. So I’m about a quarter excited and three-quarters hugely nervous about it. Update – it’s now been scheduled for Thursday 27th December.

Cooking to be done

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

I’m busy, busy, busy the next couple of days. Saturday night we have 25 people coming over for a Christmas Party. Yikes! This year we’ve become a two-business family. Interesting times. But it’s something that could never happen without our supporters’ network. The family, friends and clients who’ve provided encouragement, employment, much needed good humour and excellent advice. Saturday night is our way of saying thank you. So I’ve got some cooking to do . . . There will be: ...

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

Only two days in and the Menu for Hope campaign is edging towards US$10,000. The full list of prizes is now up at Chez Pim, while more prizes have been added to the Asia-Pacific pool. I can’t decide what to bid on. My mind is obsessing about the bag of world’s hottest chillies offered by Rambling Spoon. While Stonesoup’s cookery books and dinner at Perama are also sounding lovely. h3. The Limes & Lycopene prize And don’t forget the …

Echinacea: does it work?

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

Every few months it seems there’s a different story about echinacea. One study “proves” it works, and then two months later along comes another that trashes the herb. Last week, results from a University of Connecticut (UConn) study were published, saying that echinacea reduces the chances of catching the common cold by 58 percent and reduces the duration of a cold by 1.4 days. Moreover echinacea, taken in conjuction with vitamin C, reduced the incidence of colds by 86 …

Q & A Thursday: dieticians and nutritionists

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

Phew, I think that’s quite enough about carbohydrates and grains for the moment. I just have two more questions to answer and then I’m calling it a day. I’m really enjoying reading and researching the questions you’re sending in for Q&A Thursday, so keep them coming. I’ve been asked the difference between a dietician and a nutritionist. Please note, I can only really talk about the situation here in Australia and my background. I’m not aware enough about what happens …

What's your perfect mid-week meal?

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

I have my own business and when I’m not seeing clients at the clinic , I work from home, which I really enjoy. I’ve been thinking over the last few days about what, for me, makes the perfect mid-week meal. It really started when I put together an easy vegetable casserole this week. It took ten minutes of preparation and then cooked away, by itself, in the oven for an hour. Food and eating well are such an important part …

Participants will work with Andrew to overcome obstacles, set new goals and establish strategies for fulfillment in both personal and business …

Healthy shopping tour

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

In June I’m running another Healthy Shopping Tour in Gladesville. I find that for most people eating well starts with the shopping. If your house is full of healthy, tasty and easy-to-use foods, then it’s more likely you’ll eat well during the week. However, for many people the supermarket can be a minefield, there’s just too much choice, too many products and too little time to read food labels, and make informed decisions. The Healthy Shopping Tours are run …

A commitment to meditation

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

One of the resolutions I’ve made while thinking about work life integration , has been to meditate on a daily basis. Until now I have been, at best, a sporadic meditator. It was always something I thought I should do, something that would be good for me – thought patterns which are never beneficial to starting a new routine or lifestyle change. In one of those strange instances of reminders coming from all (and unexpected) angles, I was thinking about …

Thoughts on work life balance

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

I’ve been thinking a lot about work-life balance recently: what it is, how to achieve it and perhaps most significantly, how to maintain it in the long-term. Before going away, I was tired and felt I needed my holiday just a bit too much. I’d let work and commitments overwhelm the other parts of my life – the parts that keep me healthy, stress free and full of energy. Work life balance has become such a buzz-phrase. Journalists write about …

The latest Wellbeing magazine is out and features my article on the the new RDIs and Suggested Dietary Targets , entitled Rebuilding the Food Pyramid . Working healthier and happier

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

For many, the January holidays are drawing to a close (if they haven’t finished already) and it’s back to work. It can be amazing how quickly that holiday feeling evaporates, when confronted with your pile of work, voicemail messages and email inbox? As individuals, there is much we can do to keep healthy and reduce stress while at work. Even little changes can make a difference, for example trying to leave on time at least a couple of times per …

I’m still making my way through the round-up, but there are some excellent posts and topics to review. Grand rounds was started in 2004 by Blogboyrgmi , as a weekly round up of the best of the …

Balsamic, tomato & goat's cheese bites

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

Now to the dinner party recipes . I knew everyone would be hungry when they arrived, having come directly from work, so I thought a couple of canapes would be a good idea – just enough to take the edge off the hunger. These little morsels worked well. They’re adapted from a Donna Hay recipe (issue 21 of her magazine) – I’ve changed the quantities around and used goat’s cheese instead of bocconcini. I made the pitta rounds and …

Dinner party for 12

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

Many people who run their own business spend a lot of the working week on their own. While I see clients at a great clinic , I’m not there every day, so the rest of the week I work from my home office. Running your own business is not for the faint-hearted, but there are many positives – autonomy, the heightened sense of achievement, doing something for yourself, flexible working hours, having much more control over your working day and …

Stop press . . . the Bell awards

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

I’ve just found out, not only have I been nominated for the Bell Awards . . . but I’ve actually received a Highly Commended in the category of Writer of the Year. This is for a series of articles I wrote for Wellbeing magazine. I’m very excited (and slightly overwhelmed) to have received this recognition. Of course I have to say a big thanks to the editors at Wellbeing – for commissioning me in the first place, for their support …

Watermelon: a correction

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

I’ve blogged before about lycopene, that lovely red carotenoid antioxidant. From everything I’ve read to date, foods containing lycopene have to be heated or processed for the antioxidant to become available to us. It’s one of the reasons I like this antioxidant, it puts paid to the whole “raw is best” argument. Raw is sometimes best, but not always and certainly not in the case of lycopene. Or so I thought . . . Three months ago I mentioned “a …

Bell awards

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

About a week ago I coyishly alluded to some news, about my writing . . . As you may know, since the beginning of the year I’ve been writing for Wellbeing magazine . So far they’ve published three of my articles (Label Lowdown, The Folate Debate and Glycemic Load: what the GI scale isn’t telling you) and there’s another on the way (about the new RDI). Anyway, Wellbeing have nominated me . . . as their entrant for the Writer …

Wellbeing magazine

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

The latest edition of Wellbeing magazine is out, complete with my article, dramatically titled, Glycemic Load: what the GI scale isn’t telling you . I’m not dissing the GI, it’s a useful scale, but unfortunately only gives limited information about the carbohydrate value of a particular food. The GI doesn’t take into account the realities of how we eat different foods. Whereas, the glycemic load (or GL) measures the affect on blood sugar levels of a normal serving. If you’re …

And what next?

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

Good Food Month is pretty much over and I’ve finished (for the moment) rabbiting on about carrots (yes I have been waiting all week to say that), so what’s next at Limes&Lycopene? Well, firstly, I have quite a backlog of recipes to post, so there will be lots more cooking over the next couple of weeks. I’ve got some ideas for “healthy” puddings, plus there’s going to be some blogging-by-request. I’ll post Novembers’ what’s in season guide and …

Life etc issue 7: out now

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

The latest edition of Life etc came out today, with the Christmas recipes I was working on a couple of months ago. These were both a challenge and a joy to create. As per usual, with Life etc, it’s all about fuss free cooking – in fact the theme was Don’t make it, fake it . Each dish is simple, easy and quick to cook. While not all of them fit in the Ten Minute category of my other recipes …

What I've been up to

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

Apart from my foodie tour of Campsie, I haven’t posted much this week, as I’ve been working on new recipes for Ten Minute Kitchen in Life etc . With Sydney only just gearing up for summer , I’ve been compiling autumn and winter recipes for March and June next year. I’ve also been pitching new ideas to Wellbeing magazine, so it’s been a writing week so far. In amongst this I have, of course, still been cooking, eating and thinking …

The complex nature of nutrition: calcium

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

I’m writing an article at the moment for Wellbeing magazine about the new Nutrient Reference Values released by the health department. A whole series of changes have been made – RDIs have gone up for some nutrients, down for others, for all different reasons. One that has increased is the RDI for calcium, because . . . we lose about 60mg of calcium every day in our sweat.  This simply wasn’t known when the old values were set. To add …

Herbal medicine in the news

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

There was an interesting article in the Health&Science section of the Sydney Morning Herald this week – The Hype Behind Herbs . In many ways it’s a good report and makes some valuable points. Australians spend a lot of money on complementary health products each year and, as with any industry, there are both good and bad operators and products. For consumers, faced with rows and rows of bottles, it’s really hard to tell what’s going to work …

Lentil & barley soup

Posted by kathryn in All In A Day's Work

I’ve had a rather strange time the last two days. It’s cold, wet and windy in Sydney, but I’ve been working on Christmas recipes for one of the magazines I write for. So while I’m planning and testing
